How to Make Your Office More Eco-Friendly We’re sitting here at SAFE debating the different ways in which we can make our beloved little office a more ethical and eco-friendly place to be. Creating a green office can help build towards a healthy and sustainable environment – all by following a few simple and easy tips. We thought we’d share a few of our ideas we have written down so far… 1. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Always remember the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Recycling isn’t just for newspapers and bottles – you’d be surprised! Before you think about investing in some new furniture for your office, look at what you already own. Can any of it be recycled or donated? Research into charitable organisations that will accept things such as floorings, sofas or even small appliances. Donating and reusing what you already own isn’t just a great way to save money, but also reduces the strain on the environment. 2. Green office supplies A few small changes would be to encourage the use of green office supplies, such as: Make sure the staff reuse mugs Use recyclable coffee filters Green cleaning products Staple-less staplers Pens that can be refilled 3. Get an office plant There are many advantages to having a plant on your desk. It’ll improve overall indoor air quality, increase productivity, improve wellbeing and reduce stress. In addition to this, a plant can boost your green lifestyle by reducing CO2 and carbon monoxide levels, as well as removing bacteria and everyday toxins from the air. 4. Discourage unnecessary printing You’ll find that people still tend to print out documents when it isn’t needed, so make sure you only print when it is an absolute must. A great alternative would be to use cloud-based storage – it’s easy, convenient and allows you to share and save files in your Google Drive. 5. Turn off electrics Perhaps an obvious tip, but an important one to say the least: always remember to turn off your workstation and appliances before leaving the office. An even better way to save energy would be utilising natural light. Open the blinds and place desks near the windows – not only does it reduce energy, but it’s a well-known fact that workers who sit next to windows have a higher work rate than those who don’t. Another great reason to rely on natural light in your office! 6. Get everyone involved Building a sustainable team in the office is a great way to create more awareness of eco-friendly living that goes beyond the office. Encourage your colleagues to do all the listed things above and more: tell them to reduce electricity use, donate and recycle, only print when necessary. These little changes go a long way when it comes to creating an ethical lifestyle – in and out of the office. What do you think of SAFE’s tips towards an eco-friendly environment?
