NATIONWIDE - U.K.

Background

SAFE's previous work and research has revealed that conventional civil society (e.g. Women’s institutes) is patronised by people with a common interest, but that there is a significant portion of society (mainly 18-30yrs urban) that do not deem civil society accessible or relevant and that do not share a common interest with it.
This disengagement makes them susceptible to stigmas about global issues, such as immigration and poverty. They don’t see that their actions affect their society or the world and in general have little concept of global citizenship.

Project Aims

  • To address common stigmas through workshops held in places accessible to our target beneficiaries.
  • To engage the currently disengaged with issues like poverty, gender, consumerism/trade, MDG’s and other issues.
  • To promote a culturally sensitive volunteer programme that encourages people from all backgrounds to be involved in valuable community linking.

Completed Goals

  • Throughout 2010 and early 2011 we collected data through surveys, interviews and case studies, to find out what people in small communities in the UK think about current issues faced in today's society. The information collated has been used to create our response programme.
  • We have spent the last 6 months delivering our pilot programme to schools, colleges and other groups of people brought together through our on street activity and information days.
  • Through our pilot programme we have recruited and placed our first groups of international and UK volunteers. We have run additional volunteer training days to further develop the skills of those wanting to take part in an international programme.
