MUGAIYUR - INDIA

Background

The Dalits are a community of people who were traditionally called Untouchables in Indian society. As the name suggests they have been excluded from opportunities to engage with other sections of Indian society, going as far as being prevented from any contact at all.
They have suffered the consequences of extreme negative public opinion since the caste system was established. Gypsy Dalits have therefore found it difficult to integrate and establish themselves within Indian society.
The S.A.F.E. Foundation have partnered with The Weaker Community Development Trust(WCDT) to address the poverty issues that gyspy dalits in Mugaiyur have subsequently faced.

Project Aims

  • Implementation of a volunteer scheme in the area to train local people in skills that will help them find employment.
  • Establish and run two trade collectives that will enable the local people to make a living, whilst helping the project become sustainable by investing profits back in the wider community.
  • Establish a training facility that will diversify local peoples skill sets.

Completed Goals

  • In 2011 we sent our first group of volunteers to Mugaiyur. The volunteers taught the children of the community english language skills and helped local volunteers in the clinic set up by WCDT performing basic health screening. They also helped start a new agricultural programme, tilling the soil and planting medicinal trees.
  • We have established our first trade initiative with the local women and formalised this into a micro credit group
